- What to wear Horse riding?
I’m going Horse riding on Sunday, and I have no idea what to wear, the weathers gonna be pretty cold and maybe a bit of rain….any one got suggestions!!! Thanks Heaps Lois FYI my question can be used as a Poll which is why I put it in this section, a Poll of what to wear, so u referring to the section as idiots I think ur referring to urself!!

A OK, I used to ride horses in amateur show circuits so I hope I can give you some great advice. First thing is you must wear pants. Shorts will result in your legs rubbing and getting raw. Along that same note make sure your pants are a bit tight. I recommend a skinny jean. Loss pants can also result in chaffing especially if you get wet. Shirt, I would wear a long sleeve, but light weight t-shirt. Color doesn't mater, but remember a lot of times these things are good picture moments so try to find something pretty. Shoes are very important. They can mean the difference in staying on a horse or falling off easily. Ever notice how all cowboy boot of any kind have the small square heel? It's to help prevent your foot from slipping. Tennis shoes are ok to wear if you have nothing else. Just make sure what ever you wear has a non-slip sole and you won't be upset if you ruin them being around horses. Hair is also something you want to pay attention to. Some places will require you to wear a helmet. I personally would recommend one. I was thrown from a horse that was supposedly one of those "push button" horse and was usually very calm. I was wearing a helmet, the helmet cracked and I still wound up with a concussion. Wonder wear I'd be if I wasn't wearing one. Probably drooling all over my self that were. The point is a bee can sting your horse and you can wind up in a nasty situation fast. So wear you hair in a low pony tail, or french braid it, or a low braid. Think a cross between a bicycle helmet and a baseball helmet. Then pull your hair were it would be out of the way. I recommend pulling it back so you can fully enjoy the scenery and it won't end up a mess if the wind gets blowing. Jewelry and other accessories. Stay away from these as much as possible. Earrings can get caught in branches, reigns, girths, blankets, and several other odd places you would have never thought of. If you feel like you have to wear stud like earrings, less damage can come from them. Necklaces not a good idea because they can be a choking hazard, and can become one rather quickly. They also can be broken rather quickly and a valuable item lost. RIngs can be very dangerous, even wedding rings because reigns can get caught in them easily and before you know it you're missing that finger. Best to just leave them at home. Also you are not going to want to carry a purse. It's rather difficult. Cameras should be digital and make sure your batteries are full and your card empty. It's nearly impossible to load a camera when you are on a horse, I know it was funny though. Bracelets are also another no no. You may however want to bring some shatterproof sunglasses. Other tips. Horse's skin is 5 times thicker than human skin. So when you pet a horse try to apply a bit of pressure so the animal can feel you. Other wise it will feel very similar to an insect crawling on your skin. Feel free to pat on the horse as well. They really do like it. Once you are on the horse to help keep your balance sit back on your butt, roll your shoulders back, and sit tall. Stretch your legs down to the ground (Not behind you) as far as they will go. Next press the backs of your heels down so your toes are pointing up at a 45 degree angle. Then rotate your foot to point out and your calf is facing the horses barrel "rib cage." You will find it much easier to keep your balance and apply leg pressure to get your horse moving forward. You can also use you heel easier to kind of thump against the horse to get him to move and the heel is felt much more easily by the horse. This action is called giving the horse some leg. Some horses do not even need the bumping action more of you just "flexing" your entire leg. The bumping will be easier on you. BTW your legs will be soar at the end of the day. Keep in mind horse's do not have nerves like we do so apply more pressure than you would to yourself. You are not hurting the horse, in fact you are just making sure the horse can feel you. Also remember a horse's mouth is very sensitive. You only need to apply a little bit of pressure to the reigns, the instructor may use the word bit (the metal in the horse's mouth) So keep any yanking to a little as possible to keep the animal from hurting. You will also want to be aware of the flank. Make sure the instructor tell you wear it is. This area of a horse is very tender and is much like the groin area of humans. Much more sensitive than the rest of us. I hope this long boring information is helpful to your riding experience. Oh and skip the umbrella, that's a horse accident waiting to happen for sure!
